ABB AO2000-LS25

The ABB AO2000-LS25 is an in-situ laser gas analyzer module belonging to ABB’s Advance Optima AO2000 continuous gas analysis system. It measures the concentration of selected gas components directly inside stacks, pipelines, process chambers or other suitable process locations.

Unlike extractive gas analyzers, the LS25 uses an optical transmitter and receiver mounted opposite one another across the process gas. This eliminates the need for a conventional gas sampling and conditioning system in suitable installations, reducing sample-handling problems and maintenance requirements.

Gas ranges, detection limits, pressure and temperature limits depend on the target gas, optical path and analyzer version. These values should be confirmed against the specific configuration.

Core Functions

  1. Continuous gas concentration measurement: Measures selected gas components directly in the process stream using laser absorption spectroscopy.

  2. Selective gas detection: Uses a selected absorption line in the near-infrared spectrum to reduce interference from other gas components.

  3. Temperature and pressure compensation: Supports automatic correction for process temperature and pressure changes where configured.

  4. Optical transmission monitoring: Provides transmission information that can help identify optical contamination or alignment problems.

  5. Remote system integration: Operates as part of the AO2000 platform and can be integrated with compatible analyzer modules and communication systems.

  6. Process monitoring: Supplies gas measurement data for emissions monitoring, combustion optimization and industrial process control.

Design Features

  • In-situ measurement: Measures gas directly in the process, avoiding conventional sample extraction and conditioning in suitable applications.

  • Non-contact optical measurement: Uses a laser beam passing through the gas between transmitter and receiver units.

  • Low-maintenance operation: Eliminates many sample-line and gas-conditioning maintenance requirements.

  • Industrial environmental protection: Transmitter and receiver units have IP66 protection.

  • Hazardous-area options: Certified versions are available for applicable hazardous environments, subject to the exact configuration and installation requirements.

  • Flexible process installation: Purge and alignment assemblies support optical alignment and help prevent dust and contaminants from accumulating on the optical windows.

Hardware Composition

The ABB AO2000-LS25 system consists of three principal units:

  • Transmitter unit: Contains the laser module, temperature-stabilized diode laser, collimating optics and primary control electronics.

  • Receiver unit: Contains the focusing optics, photodetector and receiver electronics used to detect laser absorption.

  • Power supply unit: Provides the required operating power, converting AC input to 24 V DC in applicable configurations.

Additional installation components include purge flanges, optical alignment mechanisms, process connections and interconnecting cables. The transmitter electronics process the detected absorption signal and calculate the gas concentration.

Typical Applications

  • Power generation: Combustion monitoring and optimization in boilers and other thermal processes.

  • Oil and gas: Process gas monitoring in pipelines and industrial processing equipment.

  • Petrochemical plants: Continuous measurement of selected gases in process streams.

  • Cement manufacturing: Combustion monitoring and emissions-related process measurements.

  • Steel and glass industries: Monitoring gases in high-temperature industrial processes.

  • Pulp and paper production: Process gas monitoring and emissions control.

  • Environmental monitoring: Measuring selected gas concentrations to support emissions management and process optimization.

The appropriate target gases and measurement ranges depend on the analyzer configuration and process conditions.

Maintenance Considerations

  • Verify the complete model designation and target gas configuration before ordering replacement equipment.

  • Inspect optical windows and purge systems regularly for dust, deposits or contamination.

  • Check transmitter-to-receiver alignment if optical transmission decreases or measurement alarms occur.

  • Confirm purge gas quality, pressure and flow according to the applicable operating instructions.

  • Verify the power supply, interconnecting cables and communication connections.

  • Review analyzer diagnostics and compare readings against an appropriate reference method when required.

  • For hazardous-area installations, follow the specific certification, enclosure-purging and electrical safety requirements for the installed version.

Overall Evaluation

The ABB AO2000-LS25 is a specialized in-situ laser gas analyzer designed for continuous industrial gas measurement. Its TDLAS technology, optical transmitter-receiver arrangement and ability to measure directly in the process make it suitable for demanding applications where conventional extractive sampling can create additional maintenance or measurement challenges.
